Step-by-Step Installation Guide
Install on Quest, in the card above, is the one-click USB install. These steps are the manual path (SideQuest or ADB).
Overview
Descent 3 VR is a VR port by SgtBilko76 of the official open-source Descent 3 engine released by the Descent Developers, running standalone on Meta Quest as a sideloaded app. You sit in a virtual cockpit: the ship flies on the Touch controllers while you look around freely. The world and the cockpit are rendered in stereo; menus, cutscenes and the flat HUD float in front of you.
[!NOTE] No game data is included: the APK contains only the engine. You need your own copy of Descent 3 (original CDs, GOG or Steam; patched to v1.4 recommended). Beta, tested on Meta Quest 3 only (Quest 2, Quest Pro and Quest 3S should work but are untested). Not affiliated with Interplay, Parallax Software, Outrage Entertainment or Meta. Engine licensed under GPLv3.
Prerequisites
- Meta Quest with Developer Mode enabled.
- A PC with
adb(Android platform tools) or SideQuest. - Your own Descent 3 installation (GOG, Steam or CDs).
Step-by-Step Installation
1. Install the APK
Download Descent3-VR-0.3-beta.apk via 1-click on QuestPorts or from GitHub Releases and install it:
adb install -r Descent3-VR-0.3-beta.apk
The app appears under Unknown Sources. Updating with adb install -r keeps your game data and pilots.
2. Copy your game data (GOG or Steam)
The game reads its data from /. It needs at least d3.hog: copy all .hog files plus the missions and movies folders (optionally the .pld files). Then make the folders readable for the app:
D3DIR=/path/to/Descent3
DATA=/sdcard/Android/data/com.descentdevelopers.descent3/files
adb shell mkdir -p $DATA/missions $DATA/movies
adb push "$D3DIR"/*.hog $DATA/
adb push "$D3DIR"/missions/. $DATA/missions/
adb push "$D3DIR"/movies/. $DATA/movies/
adb shell "cd $DATA && find . -mindepth 1 -type d -exec chmod 2777 {} +"
From the original CDs, the repository's quest/ extracts the data from the disc images and pushes it to the headset.
[!WARNING] Uninstalling the app deletes this game data folder. Keep a copy of your game files.
3. Play
Launch Descent 3 from Unknown Sources. Recenter the view by holding the Meta button.
Controls (flying)
| Input | Action |
|---|---|
| Left stick | Thrust forward/back, slide left/right |
| Right stick | Turn and pitch (stick up = nose down) |
| Right / left trigger | Fire primary / secondary |
| Grips | Bank left / right |
| A | Afterburner |
| B | Flare (hold: next primary) |
| X / Y | Slide down / up |
| Right stick click | Drop countermeasure (hold: next countermeasure) |
| Left stick click | Next secondary (hold: headlight) |
| Menu button | Pause menu (hold: automap) |
In menus, use the laser pointer with a trigger, A or X to select and B or the menu button to go back. After your ship is destroyed, pull a trigger or press A to continue.
Uninstalling deletes /sdcard/Android/data/com.descentdevelopers.descent3/files/, so keep a copy of your game files and update with adb install -r instead. If the game can't read data pushed with adb, run the chmod 2777 step from the guide. Rear view and inventory have no controller buttons yet. The HUD (except the cockpit) is a flat panel and sound is not head-tracked. Some disc copies lack the music, and pre-v1.4 data lacks a few images and sounds. Custom missions with Windows-only level scripts run without their scripts. Multiplayer is untested. The display runs at 90 Hz where available.
