Overview
DolphinXR (released as Dolphin VR ReduX) is a fork of the Dolphin GameCube / Wii emulator (GPLv2+) by iChris4 that adds OpenXR support for VR on Windows, desktop Linux and standalone Meta Quest (Vulkan and OpenGL ES backends, OpenXR controllers). PrimedGun (Metroid Prime VR) is built on it.
VR features in v0.4:
- Full 3D: play games in 6DoF around you, with camera and controller anchor overrides.
- 2D virtual screen with True Depth, plus a basic 2D Cinematic Mode.
- Passthrough mixed reality on Meta Quest, foveated rendering for performance.
- Wiimote pointer with absolute pointing from your Touch controller; Wii MotionPlus gyroscope fix.
- An in-VR configuration panel for controller bindings and a first-launch screen that applies recommended Quest bindings.
- Per-game VR profiles: community
GameSettingsVRfiles in iChris4/dolphinXR-GameSettingsVR, applied automatically when you launch a supported game.
[!NOTE] Debug build, experimental. The Quest APK is a debug build (
Dolphin-VR-Redux-app-quest-debug.apk). Expect rough edges; performance depends heavily on the game, and users report it is playable but slow on Quest 2 (Quest 3 recommended). The author states the fork was developed with the use of AI tools. Unofficial, not affiliated with the Dolphin team.
Prerequisites
- Your own legally dumped GameCube or Wii games.
- Meta Quest with Developer Mode enabled (Quest 3 or 3S recommended).
- SideQuest or Android ADB (
platform-tools).
Step-by-Step Installation
- Download
Dolphin-VR-Redux-app-quest-debug.apkfrom the official GitHub release v0.4. Alternative: SideQuest app 62233. - Install the APK via SideQuest or
adb install -r Dolphin-VR-Redux-app-quest-debug.apk. - Copy your game dumps to your headset storage.
- Launch DolphinXR under Unknown Sources, apply the recommended Quest bindings on the first-launch screen, add your games folder to the library and start a game.
- Optional: add the per-game
GameSettingsVRprofiles to the Dolphin user folder (see the profiles repository).
Use the first-launch screen to apply the recommended Quest bindings, then fine-tune controls in the in-VR configuration panel. Enable foveated rendering and keep internal resolution modest on Quest 2, where users report it runs slowly. If a game looks wrong in full 3D, try the 2D virtual screen (with True Depth) or a per-game VR profile. Help: the DolphinVR Discord linked from the SideQuest page.
