Overview
Generals: Zero Hour XR is an unofficial Meta Quest 3 port of Command & Conquer: Generals – Zero Hour that turns the original game world into a stereoscopic miniature battlefield on your table or floor, in mixed reality. It runs natively on the headset (ARM64 OpenXR build): no PC, no streaming. It builds on the open-source Generals/Zero Hour engine code (GPLv3 with EA's additional terms) through the TheSuperHackers, GeneralsX and GeneralsZH-Android lineage, with the XR work by Cesarus85.
The original terrain, units and effects appear as a tabletop you can pan, rotate and zoom, with a detached build window, a persistent Commands window and a spatial UI panel you can move, tilt and scale. Select with the controller ray (drag for a selection box), give contextual orders, set control groups and waypoint routes, and rotate buildings before placing them. During offline games an experimental Ground View lets you look at the battlefield at human scale.
[!NOTE] No game data is included. You need your own complete Generals and Zero Hour installation. The supported path is Campaign and offline AI Skirmish; LAN multiplayer and LAN voice chat are experimental (Quest 3 to Quest 3 only, same version), and internet multiplayer and replays are not available. Community project, not affiliated with or endorsed by EA.
Prerequisites
- Meta Quest 3 with Developer Mode enabled and both Touch controllers.
- A USB-C data cable and ADB or SideQuest.
- Your own installed Generals + Zero Hour files, including
INIZH.bigand the base archivesTerrain.big,Textures.bigandW3D.big(Steam install tested; CD/ISO editions must be installed or fully extracted on a computer first). - About 250 MB free for the APK, plus space for the game data.
Step-by-Step Installation
1. Install the APK
Download Generals-Zero-Hour-XR.apk (v1.2.36 preview) via 1-click on QuestPorts or from GitHub Releases and install it:
adb install -r Generals-Zero-Hour-XR.apk
Always update with install -r and do not uninstall the previous build, or you lose your settings and game-folder selection.
2. Copy your game files
Copy your complete installed Generals and Zero Hour folders to the headset (all .big archives plus the Data and video folders), for example:
adb push "Command and Conquer Generals Zero Hour" /sdcard/Download/GeneralsZH
Steam installs often contain a ZH_Generals subfolder with the base game: keep it. Copy installed data, not an ISO, setup.exe, MSI or CAB.
3. Run the setup assistant
Launch Generals: Zero Hour XR from the app library and grant file access. The assistant (English/German) asks you to choose the Zero Hour folder (the one with INIZH.big, or its parent), finds the base Generals data or lets you pick it separately, then lists anything missing. Confirm with Use these folders and play.
4. Place the board
The game starts in tabletop mode in front of you. To move it, open UI → Set up play space: Free board, Real surface (uses your room scan, scene permission optional) or Manual height. Then start a campaign or skirmish.
Controls (right-handed default)
| Control | Action |
|---|---|
| Right trigger | Select or order at the ray target; hold and drag for a selection box |
| Left grip + selection | Add or remove a unit |
| Left stick | Pan the map; click to return to your base |
| Right stick | Rotate (left/right) and zoom (up/down) |
| Right grip | Cancel an armed order or clear selection |
| Left grip + right stick | Rotate a building before placing it |
| A | Show / hide the Commands window |
| B or system menu | Game menu |
| X | Recenter the board and windows in front of you |
Left-handed mode swaps the roles. The Commands window has a four-page in-game help guide.
Black or missing start screen: open Setup again and select the folder that contains INIZH.big, then check the base archives (Terrain.big, Textures.big, W3D.big). Board out of view: UI > Set up play space > Free board, UI > Windows > Reset, or press X. No room surfaces: grant scene permission in Horizon OS and load room data again, or use Free board / Manual height. Settings reset after an update: you must update with adb install -r without uninstalling. Since v1.2.36 the default resolution is High (1920 px per eye); lower it under UI > Display > Resolution if performance drops. Ground View walking and comfort are experimental and only available in offline Campaign and Skirmish. LAN matches need every player on the same version with identical game files; matches against the PC game fail to sync. For bug reports, export logs from Setup > View Logs > Share.
