Step-by-Step Installation Guide

Install on Quest, in the card above, is the one-click USB install. These steps are the manual path (SideQuest or ADB).

Overview

Homeworld: Unbound brings Homeworld (1999) to room-scale VR, running natively on Meta Quest 3. It is not a flat game on a virtual monitor: the engine renders the battle in tracked stereo around you and you command the fleet by pointing at it. Orders are placed in real 3D, routes are drawn freehand, attacks are painted, ships are their real size, and a command wheel on the left wrist carries formations, tactics, managers and hyperspace. The Sensors Manager is a navigable 3D place, and the whole battle can be scaled from a tabletop model to something you stand inside.

[!NOTE] The freely redistributable 1.05 demo ships inside the APK, so it is playable as installed. The full campaign needs your own Homeworld.big, HW_Music.wxd and HW_Comp.vce (the Remastered Collection's Homeworld1Classic/Data folder works). Tested on Quest 3 only (the manifest also lists Quest 2 and Pro). Unaffiliated fan project; the 2003 source license means it is not open source.

Prerequisites

  1. Meta Quest 3 with Developer Mode enabled (reboot after enabling, then accept Allow USB debugging).
  2. SideQuest, Sidenoder or ADB.
  3. Optional: your own Homeworld data files for the full campaign.

Step-by-Step Installation

1. Install the APK

Download homeworld-unbound-vr.apk via 1-click on QuestPorts or from GitHub Releases and install it:

adb install -r homeworld-unbound-vr.apk

Already installed? Install over the top; do not uninstall first (uninstalling deletes your saves).

2. Play the demo

Launch it from Unknown Sources. The demo campaign runs immediately.

3. Unlock the full campaign

Quit the game and grant All files access when the headset asks. Then copy your data files to Download:

adb push Homeworld.big /sdcard/Download/
adb push HW_Music.wxd /sdcard/Download/
adb push HW_Comp.vce /sdcard/Download/

Relaunch: the game finds them and starts the full campaign.

Alternative: clone the repository and run python3 install.py (or py install.py on Windows). It finds adb, installs the APK, copies your game data and grants file access.

Controls

Left (commander) Right (pointer)
Trigger Hold: command wheel Select, order, paint targets, draw routes
Grip Additive select Navigate (+ stick X cycles fleet)
Stick Orbit camera Zoom / order depth
Stick click Focus selection + recentre hologram Toggle Sensors
A / X Undo Hold: preview smart order
B / Y Cancel / close / show panel Cancel / hold to attack
Troubleshooting & Tips

If the game appears but does not respond to the controllers, press the Meta button to close any panels left open behind it (launching from SideQuest leaves its own panel holding input). If the full campaign does not start, make sure All files access is granted (headset Settings > Apps > permissions) and that Homeworld.big, HW_Music.wxd and HW_Comp.vce are in Download. Never uninstall to update: install over the existing app. Known: the sensor view shifts slightly while ships move; in multiplayer ships move in steps, Windows players cannot host or join, and two players on the same home network range cannot play over the internet. The host forwards TCP 10500 and UDP 10600.
