Overview
Max Payne VR: Nightmare Edition by HaveliSkywalker brings Remedy Entertainment's 2001 PC third-person shooter Max Payne to Meta Quest as a standalone first-person VR game. It's a VR wrapper around Rockstar's Max Payne Mobile 1.7 (64-bit): the app checks your copy of the mobile game, unpacks its game library and data, and runs it in VR with 6DoF motion controls, dual-wielding, Bullet Time, holsters on your body and physical melee. Cutscenes are re-staged in first person, and the main menu takes place in Max's house.
Install type: APK + your own game files (manual install).
[!IMPORTANT] No main game data is included. You need your own Max Payne Mobile 1.7 (64-bit): the original Rockstar APK and its OBB file (
main.<number>.com.rockstar.maxpayne.obb). The app verifies the APK by SHA-256 and checks that the OBB belongs to it. Fan project, not affiliated with Remedy, Rockstar Games or Meta.
[!WARNING] Bundled content: the APK includes a Czech fan-translated comic pack (the game's graphic novel pages with Czech text, from the 2001 M.i.D. & Ajantis translation), which is copyrighted art. It also bundles a remake of Max's house for the menu (by Neo_minigan, CC BY 4.0), HD Beretta and Desert Eagle textures and enhanced weapon sounds.
[!NOTE] Beta. v0.9.1 (October 2026). The developer distributes the APK through Google Drive and their Discord; there is no GitHub release. The manifest targets all Meta Quest headsets.
Highlights (v0.9.1):
- Smooth locomotion with snap turning, physical leaning and body collision near walls and cover.
- Dual-wield two firearms, or the lead pipe and a firearm together; draw and holster weapons from your body (empty weapons can stay in hand).
- Physical melee and bare-hand punches, with safeguards against repeated or accidental hits.
- Bullet Time, with correct bullet sounds and real bullet flight: shoot down enemy grenades and Molotov cocktails in mid-air.
- ENHANCED sound options for the Uzi and Beretta, with dry-fire clicks on empty guns.
- A wrist HUD, a Discman on your belt for your own music, and optional hand tracking.
Prerequisites
- A Meta Quest headset with Developer Mode enabled.
- SideQuest (or ADB) on a computer.
- Your own Max Payne Mobile 1.7 (64-bit) APK and its
.obbfile. - Enough free storage on the headset: the game data is unpacked on first launch.
Step-by-Step Installation
1. Install the APK
Manual install (no one-click install on QuestPorts). Download Max_Payne_VR_Nightmare_Edition_0.9.1_empty320.apk from the developer's Google Drive link on a computer, then install it with SideQuest (Install APK file from folder) or:
adb install -r Max_Payne_VR_Nightmare_Edition_0.9.1_empty320.apk
2. Copy your Max Payne Mobile files
Copy the 64-bit 1.7 APK and its .obb file to the headset, into Android/, with the file manager in SideQuest:
adb push <your Max Payne Mobile 1.7 APK> /sdcard/Android/data/com.MPQ.HaveliSkywalker/files/
adb push main.<number>.com.rockstar.maxpayne.obb /sdcard/Android/data/com.MPQ.HaveliSkywalker/files/
3. First launch
- Open MP VR from Library > Unknown Sources.
- The app checks your copy of Max Payne Mobile ("CHECKING YOUR COPY OF MAX PAYNE MOBILE") and unpacks the game library and data. Keep the headset on and the app open until it finishes.
- Once game data preparation is complete, restart the application. After that the APK and OBB are already unpacked and no longer needed.
Optional extras
- Music: copy your own MP3 (or OGG) files into the app's music folder. In the game, grab the Discman from your belt: L3 = play / pause, X and Y = change the track.
- Languages: the game's own languages (FR, ES, IT, RU, DE) work by adding
x_<language>.rasandMaxPayneSounds<Language>v2.msffrom your copy. Subtitle packs use one folder per language (cs-CZ, pl-PL, de-DE, fr-FR, ru-RU, it-IT, es-ES, pt-PT, pt-BR) with asubtitles.tsv, as described in the README.txt inside; choose them in the VR menu under LANGUAGE > SUBTITLE LANGUAGE. Czech comics and subtitles are already bundled.

"MAX PAYNE APK NOT FOUND" or "Missing: main.<number>.com.rockstar.maxpayne.obb": copy both the 64-bit Max Payne Mobile 1.7 APK and its .obb into /sdcard/Android/data/com.MPQ.HaveliSkywalker/files/. "That APK is not Max Payne Mobile 1.7 (64-bit)": only the original 64-bit 1.7 APK passes the SHA-256 check; other versions or 32-bit builds are rejected. "The OBB does not belong to this APK": use the OBB that came with the same 1.7 APK. "Unpacking did not finish" or "Could not copy the game library": check free storage on the headset, keep the headset on and the app open during setup, then restart the app. Mission map missing: check the original OBB. No music: put MP3/OGG files in the app's music folder. A language is missing and English is used: its .ras/.msf files aren't in place. App not in the Library: look under Unknown Sources; Developer Mode must be on. Help: the developer's Discord. Fan project, not affiliated with Remedy, Rockstar Games or Meta; the main game data is not provided.
