Overview
OpenMW VR for Quest by tomups is a standalone Meta Quest APK of OpenMW-VR, madsbuvi's VR fork of OpenMW, the open-source engine reimplementation of Bethesda's 2002 RPG The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. It runs fully on the headset (OpenXR, with GLES via gl4es), packaged on top of openmw-android and based on OpenMW 0.51. You explore Vvardenfell in first-person VR with tracked hands, and no PC or streaming is needed once your game files are on the headset.
Install type: APK + your own game files.
[!IMPORTANT] No game files are included. You need your own copy of Morrowind (for example from Steam or GOG), installed on a PC so you can copy its folder to the headset. The Tribunal and Bloodmoon expansions are detected automatically when their files are present. Fan project, not affiliated with Bethesda, ZeniMax or Meta.
[!NOTE] Beta, not under active development. The author describes this build as an "aperitif" until Team Beef's native Quest port of OpenMW is released, so don't expect further updates. v0.51 (July 5, 2026) is the current release. The APK declares support for Quest 2, Quest Pro, Quest 3 and Quest 3S.
Prerequisites
- A Meta Quest headset with Developer Mode enabled.
- A computer with SideQuest or ADB and a USB-C data cable.
- Your installed Morrowind folder (the one that contains
Data Files), about 1–2 GB with both expansions.
Step-by-Step Installation
1. Install the APK
Download com.openmw.vr-0-51-release.apk via 1-click on QuestPorts or from GitHub Releases. Install it with SideQuest (Install APK file from folder) or:
adb install -r com.openmw.vr-0-51-release.apk
The file name says com.openmw.vr, but the app's package is org.openmw.vr. Use that in the paths below.
2. Copy your Morrowind data (pick one option)
Option A: the full Morrowind folder on shared storage. Push your whole Morrowind folder (the one that contains Data Files/) to /:
adb push Morrowind/ /sdcard/Morrowind/
Then grant the storage permission when the app asks, or grant it ahead of time:
adb shell pm grant org.openmw.vr android.permission.READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE
Option B: only the contents of Data Files, in the app's own folder (no permission needed).
adb push "Morrowind/Data Files/." /sdcard/Android/data/org.openmw.vr/files/data/
With Option B, run the app once first so Android creates its folder, or let adb push create it.
3. Launch
Open Library > Unknown Sources > OpenMW VR. On every launch the app regenerates openmw.cfg (in /). It scans /, / and the app's data/ folder, and loads every game file it finds, with Morrowind, Tribunal and Bloodmoon ordered first. You don't need to edit any config by hand.
Notes
- Because the config is rebuilt on each launch, manual edits to
openmw.cfgare overwritten. - Advanced users can use
android/from the repo, which pushes the data, installs the APK, grants permissions, launches the game and captures a log.run-on-device.sh ~/ Morrowind - To see startup errors:
adb logcat -s OpenMW SDL openxr VrApi DEBUG.

The game doesn't start or says no game files were found: check that Morrowind.esm and the BSA files are either in /sdcard/Morrowind/Data Files/ (Option A) or directly in /sdcard/Android/data/org.openmw.vr/files/data/ (Option B, the contents of Data Files, not the folder itself). With Option A, the storage permission must be granted: accept the prompt or run adb shell pm grant org.openmw.vr android.permission.READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE. The package is org.openmw.vr even though the APK file is named com.openmw.vr. Expansions missing: copy Tribunal.esm/Bloodmoon.esm and their BSAs with the rest of Data Files; they're picked up on the next launch. Manual openmw.cfg edits disappear: the app regenerates the config on every launch. Crashes at startup: capture a log with adb logcat -s OpenMW SDL openxr VrApi DEBUG. App not in the Library: look under Unknown Sources; Developer Mode must be on. This build is no longer actively developed (the author points to Team Beef's upcoming native port), so bugs may not be fixed. Fan project, not affiliated with Bethesda, ZeniMax or Meta; no game files are provided.
