OpenXWA VR (Star Wars: X-Wing Alliance)
Star Wars: X-Wing Alliance (1999) as a standalone VR game on Meta Quest 3/3S, built on the open-source OpenXWA reimplementation: seated VR cockpits, a grabbable flight stick and throttle, a touch console on your lap, tactical map, radial wingman menu and voice commands. A Windows launcher installs it and copies your own game files.

Due to Rockstar Games copyright, the VR mod cannot be distributed as a pre-compiled APK. An automated PC installer merges the VR injector with your legally purchased Google Play APK and installs it to your Quest via USB.

Step-by-Step Installation Guide
Install on Quest, in the card above, is the one-click USB install. These steps are the manual path (SideQuest or ADB).
Overview
OpenXWA VR brings Star Wars: X-Wing Alliance (1999) to Meta Quest 3/3S as a standalone VR game, no PC needed while you play. It is a fork of OpenXWA, Adrien Moulin's open-source reimplementation of the game, and runs the original game data with seated VR cockpits, a touch console on your lap (energy, shields, targeting, wingmen, ship commands), a flight stick and throttle lever you grab with the controllers (or the thumbsticks), a side panel with the tactical map, a radial menu for wingman orders, on-headset voice commands, VR menu environments, Restart Mission and in-mission Quick Save/Load. Your PC pilots can come along.
Install type: PC launcher. A Windows program installs the app and copies your game files over USB.
[!IMPORTANT] No game data is included. You need your own installed X-Wing Alliance on a Windows PC, from GOG, Steam or the original CD. Pico and Steam Frame are supported but experimental. Unofficial fan project; Star Wars and X-Wing Alliance are trademarks of their owners. VR-specific code was written with AI assistance, as the README states.
Prerequisites
- Meta Quest 3 or 3S with Developer Mode enabled (Meta Horizon phone app > Devices > your headset > Headset settings > Developer Mode).
- A Windows PC with X-Wing Alliance installed.
- A USB-C cable that carries data (not charge-only).
Step-by-Step Installation
- Download
OpenXWA-Quest-1.0.0.zipfrom the official GitHub Releases and unzip it anywhere on your PC (checksums inSHA256SUMS.txt). - Connect the headset by USB and double-click
OpenXWA-VR-Launcher.exe. If Windows says "Windows protected your PC" (the launcher is not code-signed yet), click More info > Run anyway. - The launcher finds your X-Wing Alliance (if it's somewhere unusual, drag the game folder onto the launcher or paste its path), installs the app, copies the game files (about 1 GB, a few minutes), checks every file and asks whether to bring your PC pilots along. Put the headset on once to allow USB debugging ("Always allow from this computer"); after that it can stay on the desk.
- If no adb is found (SideQuest and Meta Quest Developer Hub bring their own), the launcher offers to download Google's.
- In the headset: Library > Unknown sources > OpenXWA.
Updating: download the new release and run its launcher; it updates the app and copies only missing or changed files. Pilots and settings stay.
Manual install without the launcher (from README.txt in the zip): files copied with a plain adb push belong to the wrong user, so let the app unpack a zip instead. Zip the contents of your X-Wing Alliance folder into xwa.zip (so RESDATA.TXT is at the top), then:
adb install -r OpenXWA-quest-1.0.0.apk
adb shell content call --uri content://org.openxwa.quest.setup --method mkdirs --arg XWA
adb push xwa.zip /sdcard/Android/obb/org.openxwa.quest/openxwa-import.zip
adb shell content call --uri content://org.openxwa.quest.setup --method unzip --arg XWA
Controls
| Control | Action |
|---|---|
| Right stick | Pitch / yaw |
| Left stick | Roll (X), throttle (Y) |
| Right trigger / left trigger | Fire / change weapon |
| Right grip / left grip (hold) | Countermeasures / radial menu |
| A / B | Next / previous target |
| X / Y | Target closest enemy / target my attacker |
| Right / left stick click | Target in sights / link weapons |
| Left menu button | Game menu (VR Options and controller help are here) |
| Thumb rest double-tap, then speak | Voice command, e.g. "attack my target" |
In menus the right controller is a laser pointer. Taking the headset off or opening the Meta menu pauses the game.
Launcher cannot find the game: drag your X-Wing Alliance folder onto OpenXWA-VR-Launcher.exe or paste its path when asked (a raw CD copy needs the ALLIANCE folder merged into the root, as in a GOG/Steam install). Headset not detected: enable Developer Mode, use a data-capable USB-C cable and accept "Allow USB debugging" in the headset. Game cannot read files you copied yourself: plain adb push gives them the wrong owner; use the launcher or the manual zip import from README.txt. Windows SmartScreen warning: the launcher is not code-signed yet (More info > Run anyway). For bug reports, run the launcher and choose Collect logs (or start it with --logs) and attach the logs to a GitHub issue. Uninstalling the app also deletes the copied game files and your pilots on the headset. Multiplayer is not implemented.
