Step-by-Step Installation Guide

Install on Quest, in the card above, is the one-click USB install. These steps are the manual path (SideQuest or ADB).

Overview

SM64 Co-Op DX VR Standalone runs Super Mario 64 natively on Meta Quest (ARM64, OpenXR): no PC, no streaming after installation. It is FullDiveGames' standalone port of his physics-based sm64coopdx-VR (also available for PC VR), derived from SM64 Co-Op DX, which is built on the Super Mario 64 decompilation.

You play in first person by default, with tracked gloves: close a fist with Grip and punch, grab and throw objects, punch both hands forward to dive, lower your head to crouch (or ground-pound in mid-air), climb poles, ledges and monkey bars hand over hand, and swing Bowser around by his tail. Since v0.9.2 you can also jump and swim with physical gestures. Extras include Fire Flower, Propeller Mushroom and Power Star power-ups, a level select, SM64 Co-Op DX mods and DynOS packs, and online co-op with built-in voice chat. A third-person mode is available for conventional gamepad-style play.

[!NOTE] No ROM is included. You need your own unmodified Super Mario 64 US .z64 ROM. Tested by the author on Quest 3 only; standalone co-op, chat and the VR keyboard are experimental. Unofficial fan project, not endorsed by Nintendo or the SM64 Co-Op DX team. The author describes it as vibe-coded.

Prerequisites

  1. Meta Quest 3 with Developer Mode enabled.
  2. SideQuest (Advanced Installer) or ADB on a computer.
  3. Your own unmodified US .z64 ROM.

Step-by-Step Installation

1. Install the APK

Download SM64-Co-Op-DX-VR-Quest-v0.9.21.apk via 1-click on QuestPorts or from GitHub Releases and install it with SideQuest (Install APK file from folder) or:

adb install -r SM64-Co-Op-DX-VR-Quest-v0.9.21.apk

Updating: install over the existing app (the in-game updater can also download new releases). Do not uninstall first, or you lose the imported ROM, saves and settings.

2. Copy your ROM

Put the ROM in the headset's Download folder so it is easy to find:

adb push your-sm64-us.z64 /sdcard/Download/

3. Import and play

In the headset: App Library → Unknown Sources → SM64 Co-Op DX VR. On first launch, pick your ROM in the Android file picker. The app validates and imports it into private storage; it will likely close afterwards. That is expected: reopen it and play.

4. Optional: mods and DynOS packs

Allow access to manage all files when asked, then restart once: the game creates /sdcard/SM64VR/mods/. Copy extracted mod folders (from mods.sm64coopdx.com) there, and DynOS packs to /sdcard/SM64VR/dynos/packs/. Restart, then enable mods under Host > Mods.

Troubleshooting & Tips

After importing the ROM the app usually closes: reopen it from Unknown Sources. Only an unmodified US .z64 ROM is accepted. If a demanding level or mod can't hold the refresh rate, lower Render Scale (default 80%, 10-100%) or pick 72/90 Hz instead of the 120 Hz default under Settings > Performance; Ultra Performance Mode is also available. Menu text can occasionally look blurry or wrong (more often in co-op): restarting the app or headset usually fixes it. Mods must be extracted folders directly inside /sdcard/SM64VR/mods (no extra nesting); large Lua mods, model packs, ROM hacks and texture packs may exceed standalone limits. If you declined the all-files permission, mods only load from the private Android/data/com.fulldivegames.sm64coopdxvr/files/mods fallback. To play with a PC VR player, use Direct Connection with matching versions. True First Person and True Diving camera effects are experimental and can cause motion sickness.
