Overview
Smash Remix VR by VistaLargaGames (the developer of Wave Race 64 VR) runs Nintendo's 1999 N64 fighter Super Smash Bros. natively on Meta Quest 3 as a standalone VR game. It also runs Smash Remix 2.0.1, the community fan expansion with all of its extra fighters, stages and modes. It's a static recompilation, not emulation, built on N64Recomp, N64ModernRuntime, RT64 and the Super Smash Bros. decompilation. Battles run at 60 fps with anti-aliasing, and an immersive view lets you look around the stage with your head while the camera follows your fighter. Online VS supports 2 to 4 players, each on their own Quest, joined with a room code.
Install type: ready-to-install APK. You pick your own ROM inside the app, so you don't need a PC step to copy files.
[!IMPORTANT] No game files are included. You need a ROM made from your own Super Smash Bros. (USA / North America) cartridge. For Smash Remix, patch that USA ROM yourself with the official Smash Remix 2.0.1 patch. Smash Remix is free and must never be sold. Fan project, not affiliated with Nintendo, HAL Laboratory or Meta.
[!NOTE] Beta. v0.8.5 (October 20, 2026) is the first public standalone release. The APK declares support for Quest 3 and Quest 3S, and the README targets Quest 3.
Prerequisites
- Meta Quest 3 (or 3S) with Developer Mode enabled.
- SideQuest (or ADB) on a computer and a USB-C data cable to install the APK.
- Your Super Smash Bros. (USA) ROM, your patched Smash Remix 2.0.1 ROM, or both, on the headset's storage (for example in
Download).
Step-by-Step Installation
1. Install the APK
Download SmashRemixVR-Quest-0.8.5.apk via 1-click on QuestPorts or from GitHub Releases. Install it with SideQuest (Install APK file from folder) or:
adb install -r SmashRemixVR-Quest-0.8.5.apk
2. Put your ROM on the headset
Copy your ROM(s) to the Quest, for example into the Download folder:
adb push "Super Smash Bros. (USA).z64" /sdcard/Download/
You can also use SideQuest's file browser or a USB file transfer.
3. First launch and ROM selection
- Open Library > Unknown Sources > Smash Remix VR.
- In the start window, choose your Super Smash Bros. (USA) ROM and/or your Smash Remix 2.0.1 ROM. The game checks the file and remembers it.
- From then on, just press Play Smash Bros. or Play Smash Remix.
Controls
| Button | Action |
|---|---|
| Left stick | Move |
| A / B | A / B |
| Right grip | Jump |
| Left trigger | Z (shield) |
| Right trigger | R (grab) |
| Right stick | Smash attacks in battle, C buttons in menus |
| Left menu button | Start / pause |
Look around the stage with your head; the camera follows your fighter. The game pauses while the Quest menu is open, except in online matches. Quitting from the Quest menu closes the game at once and keeps your save.
Online VS
- 2 to 4 players, each on their own Quest, with an internet connection.
- One player picks Host in the start window and shares the room code; the others pick Join and enter it.
- For a Smash Remix room, turn on "Online game: Smash Remix" in the start window before hosting or joining. Everyone in the room then plays Remix, so every player needs their own patched Remix ROM.
Credits
Port by VistaLargaGames. Smash Remix by the Smash Remix team. Built on N64Recomp, N64ModernRuntime and RT64 with the ssb-decomp-re decompilation.
The ROM is rejected in the start window: use a Super Smash Bros. (USA / North America) ROM from your own cartridge; other regions aren't supported. For Smash Remix, apply the official Smash Remix 2.0.1 patch to that USA ROM (other Remix versions may not match). The ROM doesn't show up in the picker: check that the copy finished and look in the Download folder of internal storage. Can't join an online room: all players need internet and the same app version, and everyone needs a Smash Remix ROM when "Online game: Smash Remix" is on. Pressing Cancel on Host now returns to the start window (it crashed before v0.8.5), so update if you're on an older build. The game doesn't pause in online matches when you open the Quest menu; that's by design. App not in the Library: look under Unknown Sources; Developer Mode must be on. Fan project, not affiliated with Nintendo, HAL Laboratory or Meta; no game files are provided. Smash Remix is free and must never be sold.
