Overview
XRKart 64 brings Mario Kart 64 racing to standalone VR on Meta Quest. It is a fan project built on the SpaghettiKart and LibUltraShip communities' work. Two presentation styles: Comfort (the original game on a world-locked virtual screen, default) and Stereo (native per-eye VR cameras with head tracking during unpaused single-player races, in first or third person).
[!NOTE] No ROM or Nintendo assets are included. You need your own legally dumped US Mario Kart 64 ROM (
.z64,.n64or.v64; 12 MiB, normalized SHA-1579C48E211AE952530FFC8738709F078D5DD215E). Verification and extraction happen locally on the Quest. Tested on Quest 2 and Quest 3. Not affiliated with Nintendo.
Prerequisites
- Meta Quest 2 or 3 with Developer Mode enabled.
- SideQuest or ADB.
- Your own US Mario Kart 64 ROM.
Step-by-Step Installation
1. Install the APK
Download XRKart-64-v0.2.0-Quest.apk via 1-click on QuestPorts or from GitHub Releases and install it:
adb install -r XRKart-64-v0.2.0-Quest.apk
2. Copy your ROM
adb push mk64-us.z64 /sdcard/Download/
3. Generate game data
Open XRKart 64 from Unknown Sources, choose Select legally dumped ROM, pick your ROM, wait for verification, then Generate local game data. It can take several minutes (about eight on Quest 2): keep the app open and the headset awake. The game starts automatically when done; later, just choose Start game.
4. Enter Stereo
Start a single-player race and, once it is running, hold the left Menu button for about 0.6 s. Hold it again to switch between first and third person.
Racing controls
| Quest control | Action |
|---|---|
| Left stick | Steer |
| Right trigger / left trigger | Accelerate / brake and reverse |
| Right grip | Hop and drift |
| A | Use item |
| Left-stick click | Recenter |
| Tap / hold left Menu | Pause / Stereo and camera switch |
VR Settings are the last entry of the pause menu (some sections have a second page: keep scrolling down).
Stereo only works while actively racing in single-player; menus, results, cutscenes, multiplayer and pause intentionally use the Comfort screen. Camera off-center: click the left stick while racing or use VR Settings > Stereo Settings > Stereo Mode > Recenter View. A and B act as N64 racing buttons while driving (Select/Back only in menus). Missing settings are usually on a second page (Controls, VR Camera). Render Scale changes need an app restart. If generated data is missing, return to the launcher and run Generate local game data again; uninstalling or clearing app data deletes generated data and settings. For motion comfort start Seated in Comfort or Third Person and try Lock Head Roll.
