Overview
Need for Speed: Underground VR runs EA's 2003 street racer natively on Meta Quest 3 using a static recompilation of the original Xbox USA release (Vulkan + OpenXR), based on cherepavel/nfsu1-android with VR code adapted from DR-89's Need for Speed: Underground 2 VR. It adds a cockpit camera with per-car fitting, one- or two-hand steering by gripping a virtual wheel, three working rear-view mirrors, dashboard instruments and a minimap on the center console.
Install type: APK + your own game files (imported on the headset).
[!NOTE] v0.3.0-preview.1 is the first public preview. Quest 3 is the tested target. Quest users have confirmed Quick Race, basic driving, the cockpit, mirrors and instruments; a 64-second sample at 1680 x 1760 per eye averaged about 45 FPS, so a stable 72 FPS is not guaranteed. All race modes, long sessions and audio are still being tested. A Windows PCVR build is on the release page but has not been validated in a headset yet.
[!IMPORTANT] No game data is included. You need your own complete, unmodified original Xbox USA / NTSC-U disc of Need for Speed: Underground (1): title ID
45410047,default.xbeof 2,473,984 bytes with SHA-256f4b3dc578fa38abb59961c0c1c692f28514b2ca8bfbd43854c726a1636b34b22(417 files, about 1.9 GB installed). PC, PS2, GameCube, PAL editions, Underground 2 and modified executables do not work.
Prerequisites
- Meta Quest 3 with Developer Mode enabled.
- A computer with SideQuest or ADB, and a USB-C data cable.
- Your Xbox dump as
.iso/.xiso, a.zip/.7zof the extracted disc (default.xbeplusCARS/,FRONTEND/,GLOBAL/,LANGUAGES/,MEMCARD/,MOVIES/,SOUND/,TRACKS/), or a.zip/.7zcontaining exactly one ISO. RAR and split archives are not supported. - Free space for the import: about 5 GB with a ZIP/7z of extracted files, 11 GB with a full ~7.8 GB ISO, 18 GB with a 7z containing a full ISO.
Step-by-Step Installation
- Download
NFSU-VR-Quest3-v0.3.0-preview.1.apkfrom the official GitHub Releases (checksums inSHA256SUMS.txt). - Connect the Quest by USB, accept Allow USB debugging, and install it with SideQuest (Install APK) or:
adb install -r NFSU-VR-Quest3-v0.3.0-preview.1.apk - Copy your ISO or archive to the headset's shared
Downloadfolder (File Explorer: This PC > Quest 3 > Internal shared storage > Download, SideQuest's file manager, oradb push NFSU-USA.iso /). Wait for the transfer to finish. No copying intosdcard/ Download/ Android/is needed.data - In the headset open Library > Unknown Sources > NFSU1 Quest Development. The first launch opens setup.
- Press Select archive, browse to Download, pick your ISO/XISO/ZIP/7z and keep setup open while it extracts and verifies the files (large 7z archives take several minutes).
- Press Start game. Later launches go straight into VR. After a successful import you can delete the source file from
Downloadto free space.
Controls
| Action | Touch control |
|---|---|
| Steer | Left stick, or grip the virtual wheel near its rim (one or two hands) |
| Accelerate / brake-reverse | Right trigger / left trigger |
| Nitro / handbrake | A / B |
| Manual gear up / down | Right stick up / down |
| Cycle camera (incl. cockpit) | Right stick click |
| Recenter | Both stick clicks together |
| Pause / VR Settings | Left menu button, then X in the game's root pause menu |
VR Settings cover steering sensitivity, wheel rotation, seat position and per-eye resolution (resolution changes need a restart).
Updating: install the new APK over the old one (SideQuest or adb install -r, same signing key). Uninstalling or clearing app storage deletes imported data, saves and settings. To change game data use NFSU1 · Game data > Reimport game data; saves are kept.
Executable/hash mismatch on import: only the complete, unmodified original Xbox USA Underground 1 disc works (title ID 45410047); PC, PAL and NFSU2 data are incompatible, and renaming a file does not convert it. Source missing from the picker: finish copying, then browse to internal storage > Download instead of Recent. Import runs out of storage: budget for the source copy, any unpacked ISO and about 1.9 GB of installed files. 7z memory error: repack with a dictionary of 64 MiB or less, use ZIP, or copy the unpacked ISO. "Game is running" during import: close the game and press Check again. Low FPS: try 1680 x 1760 or 1280 x 1344 per eye in VR Settings, save and restart; 72 FPS is not guaranteed. Cockpit missing: cycle the camera with the right stick click while racing (the menu car preview has no cockpit). VR Settings missing: open the game's own root pause menu (not the Quest menu) and press X. APK signature mismatch: only install builds signed with the same key, or you lose your imported data. First public preview: bugs and performance issues are expected.
