Overview

Port0r: Dirt Dash VR brings Namco's 1995 off-road arcade racer Dirt Dash (Namco System Super 22) to Meta Quest 3 as a standalone app in true stereoscopic 3D. The arcade code runs through MAME (0.289), and Port0r's own renderer redraws every 3D polygon for each eye, from the city streets to the night forest and the jumps. It's from the same developer as Port0r: Rally VR and Port0r: Daytona USA VR.

Install type: APK + your own game files.

Highlights:

  • Rumble on every hit, a jolt in both hands, stronger for harder hits (Settings > Game > Vibrations turns it off).
  • Refresh rate of your choice (72, 90 or 120 Hz; 72 Hz by default on Quest 2), applied from the start.
  • New in v0.1.4: the picture is back on Quest 2, and no more sound skip when the headset switches to 120 Hz.

[!NOTE] No game data is included. You need your own, legally owned copy of the arcade game as the MAME sets dirtdash.zip and namcoc71.zip, kept zipped. The sets must match MAME 0.289. Fan project, not affiliated with Bandai Namco or Meta.

Prerequisites

  1. Meta Quest 3 (the reference headset; v0.1.4 also fixes Quest 2).
  2. Developer Mode enabled (free developer organisation at developer.oculus.com, then Meta Horizon app > Devices > Headset settings > Developer mode, then restart the headset).
  3. Your MAME 0.289 dirtdash.zip and namcoc71.zip.
  4. SideQuest or ADB on a computer (or just the headset's browser for the game files).

Step-by-Step Installation

1. Install the APK

Download Port0r-DirtDashVR-v0.1.4-quest3.apk via 1-click on QuestPorts, from GitHub Releases or itch.io. Install it with SideQuest (Install APK file from folder) or:

adb install -r Port0r-DirtDashVR-v0.1.4-quest3.apk

The APK checksum is in SHA256SUMS.txt on the release page.

2. Copy your game files

Put dirtdash.zip and namcoc71.zip in the headset's Download folder. The app searches the whole storage (a ROMS folder works too), names are not case sensitive, and the game waits until both files are there before it starts.

adb push dirtdash.zip namcoc71.zip /sdcard/Download/

You can also copy them with SideQuest's file browser, over USB (accept Allow access to data in the headset; on a Mac use OpenMTP), or download them from your own cloud storage with the headset's browser.

3. First launch

  1. Library > filter All > Unknown sources > Port0r: Dirt Dash VR.
  2. Allow All files access when asked.
  3. Return to the app: the game is copied in and starts by itself. Until then, a setup screen lists the missing files.

Updating: Dirt Dash VR checks its releases at launch, shows what's new and installs the update from the headset; settings, records and game files are kept. On a Quest 2 that had sound but no picture with an older version, install v0.1.4 over it with SideQuest or adb install -r.

Troubleshooting & Tips

Files reported missing: the files must be named dirtdash.zip and namcoc71.zip, kept zipped (not extracted folders), and All files access must be allowed (Settings > Apps > Port0r: Dirt Dash VR > Permissions). The game waits until both files are present. "Wrong version of the game files": the sets must match MAME 0.289; check them with a ROM manager (ClrMamePro, RomVault) and drop the corrected zips on the headset in place of the old ones. Quest 2 with sound but no picture: install v0.1.4 over the old APK with SideQuest or adb install -r (the in-game updater can't show without a picture). Controllers do nothing: restart the headset. The game stutters: turn on Dynamic resolution (Smoothness tab) or set Resolution to Native. App not in the Library: look under Unknown sources; Developer Mode must be on and the headset restarted. Help: #install-help and #bug-reports on the Port0r Discord. Fan project, not affiliated with Bandai Namco or Meta; no game data is provided.
